Quality Time vs. Acts of Service

Hey friend!! Welcome back to another blog post 🙂

In the last post, we talked about some of the people helping Paul spread the gospel and how they were able to spot missing information in each other’s preaching. So my question to you is how do you think they were able to do that? How where they able to tell that key info was left out of Apollos teachings? Well…let’s get into it!

Luke 10:38-42, Jesus is visiting 2 women who were very excited to have Him in their home. One of them goes into the kitchen and starts prepping an elaborate dinner, you know, to welcome the Lord into their home. But her sister, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about the cooking and all the prep so she sits with Jesus, listening to all He had to say. The woman in the kitchen gets angry and basically gets an attitude with Jesus and asks Him to tell her sister to join her in the kitchen and help. Jesus tells her “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10: 41-42).

Now most Christians (including myself) enjoy “working for the Kingdom of God” aka serving. While serving is great, it shouldn’t take the place of personal quiet time/relationship with God. In our scripture reading today, we see that one of the women is overly concerned about the work she’s putting in to welcome the Lord into their home while the other is more concerned about spending time in the presence of Jesus. Jesus commends the woman spending time with Him because working “for the Kingdom of God” should never take the place of personal relationship with Jesus and spending time with Him. Therefore I believe the reason Priscilla and Aquilla (from the previous post) were able to discern the mistakes in Apollos’ teaching was because they had spent time in God’s presence, learning the word of God for themselves.

Has your service/work for God caused you to be “too busy” to spend time in His presence? Has it caused you to distance yourself from the true presence of God? It is important to understand that more than anything else, God wants our hearts. I believe our faith grows to another level when we are intentional about making time to seek Him and spend time in His presence. That’s how we show Him our hearts belong to Him.

So today I encourage you to make spending quality time with God and in His word a priority in your schedule. It doesn’t have to be hours and hours, it could be 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes but you must be intentional about it. I pray that by doing this, we can all GROW 2GETHER! Grace and peace 🙂
